A lot of people stop using sunscreen once the weather gets colder… but your skin still needs sun protection.
Even in winter, UV rays are still present. They can pass through clouds, windows, and even reflect off snow which can actually increase exposure. If you’re spending time outside, driving, or sitting near windows, your skin is still getting UV exposure.
Another thing many people don’t think about is screen exposure. Most of us spend hours a day on our phones, tablets, or computers, which means our skin is constantly interacting with blue light as well.
That’s why dermatologists often recommend wearing SPF every day, year-round.
A few winter SPF tips:
-
If you have dry skin, look for a hydrating sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) that layers well over moisturizer.
-
If you have oily or acne-prone skin, lightweight or mineral sunscreens can help protect without feeling heavy.
-
If you’re spending time around snow or at higher elevations, sunscreen is even more important because snow reflects UV rays.
-
Don’t forget areas like your neck, ears, and hands, which are often exposed in winter.
Using daily SPF can help with hyperpigmentation and to protect collagen which can help your skin maintain a healthy appearance over time.
